AI Tip: Make the AI Debate Itself

This is an interesting way of exploring two sides to a given issue or any proposition. This technique works well with a question that has a clear “yes” or “no” answer. What we will do is get the AI to create two sides of a debate and then judge a winner. Let’s say you are thinking about whether you should allow your 12-year old daughter to use TikTok.

We start with a prompt instructing the LLM of the rules:

You copy and paste this to your AI chatbot of choice - the AI will then ask for your proposition. You say “My 12-year old daughter should not be allowed to use TikTok.”

The result will be a pretty good debate exploring both sides.…

“AI will kill us all”

Suddenly we have a whole world of people thinking and talking about artificial intelligence. A lot of this exploration is in the form of thought experiments. There is obviously lots of empirical research going on too, but as soon as you imagine a near future with some more sophisticated AI in the world, you find yourself having to confront Big Questions (technical, social, neurological, epistemological, philosophical…).

One popular Big Question is “Should we worry that AI will kill us all?” And like all the Big AI Questions, there are smart people with good arguments on the “Yes!” and “No!” sides of this proposition.…

My History with AI and new ‘AI For Everybody’ Course

Welcome to AI for Everybody!

I created this site for a few reasons. I’ve been giving a sort of “AI 101” course called “AI for Everybody” and as an adjunct to that I figured it would be useful to have a central place to share materials with students as well as any new discoveries I’ve made in the AI world that might be useful for them (you).

My History with AI

Just to share a little about my own history and interest in AI, I’ve been something of a software developer for years, on and off. I would describe myself as more of a software (and everything else) bricoleur[^1] - but in any case, I’ve been involved with and thinking about computers and programming to some extent for most of my life.…
